Authorities have launched an investigation after a dead dog was found in a trash can on a Jersey Shore road.

Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland says the dog was discovered Thursday morning by Upper Township Public Works employees on Cove Road in Beesley’s Point.

The dog is described as a white-haired female with tan patches, possibly a cattle dog mix or corgi-terrier, weighing between 35 and 40 pounds.

Shore Animal Control says the dog had a broken front leg along with other injuries and was likely placed into the trash can while still alive.

County detectives are conducting the animal cruelty investigation.
