Police probe who fired fatal shot in Warminster standoff

Police still aren’t sure who fired the shots that killed an elderly neighbor during a standoff at a suburban Philadelphia apartment complex.

Investigators say they had been responding Tuesday night to the complex in Warminster after a report that the man said he was going to kill himself.Authorities say 49- year-old Andrew Cairns fired at officers, who fired four shots back. He eventually surrendered early Wednesday.

The standoff forced the evacuation of many residents. But an 89-year-old downstairs neighbor, Marie Zienkewicz, was killed in the crossfire. Police don’t know whose shots hit her.

Cairns is charged with attempted homicide, assault on a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering others and firearms crimes. He’s in custody on $10 million bail and it wasn’t clear if he had an attorney.
