Philly DA appeals bail set for couple charged in son’s faith-healing death

The Philadelphia District Attorney’s office is appealing the bail set for Herbert and Catherine Schaible, who have been charged with third-degree murder in faith-healing death of a second son.Seven-month-old Brandon Schaible died in April of bacterial pneumonia, which the couple’s 2-year-old son, Kent, died of in 2009. The couple admitted to praying for their sons’ recovery rather than seek medical treatment.

The Schaibles were originally ordered held without bail, according to a statement released Thursday morning by the DA’s office, but bail was set at $250,000 each after a defense objection.

The pair was sentenced to 10 years’ probation in the death of their first son, with the condition that they seek medical help for their other children in the event they became ill.
