PhilaU’s Herb Magee heads to the Hall tonight

Philadelphia University’s men’s basketball coach Herb Magee will become an official member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame tonight in Springfield, Mass.

The legendary coach with 922 career wins became the NCAA’s all time, all division wins leader last year when he surpassed Coach Bobby Knight’s record of 902 wins.

He’s been named the National Coach of the Year, the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year and is a member of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.

Magee will join 10 other inductees in the Class of 2011 Hall of Fame tonight, including five-time NBA champion Dennis Rodman, former NBA star and 1992 Dream Team member Chris Mullen, and four-time NCAA women’s coach of the year Tara VanDerveer.

The Hall of Fame ceremony will be televised live on NBA TV, beginning with a 2011 Hall of Fame Special at 6 p.m. followed by a one-hour red carpet show at 7 p.m. The enshrinement ceremony will begin at 8 p.m.

Philadelphia University will hold an on-campus Hall of Fame celebration on Oct. 15. Tickets for that event are $150 per person. For more information, call 215-951-2851.
