Penn student’s Center City death ruled suicide

Philadelphia police say a freshman at the University of Pennsylvania committed suicide by jumping from a parking garage roof in Center City.

Police released their findings late Saturday, a day after 19-year-old Madison Holleran, of Allendale, N.J. was pronounced dead about 7 p.m. Friday.

Holleran was a member of the university’s varsity track and field team.

Penn president Amy Gutmann said in a statement that Holleran “was bright and well-liked with an incredible future ahead of her. There are simply no words that can properly convey the sense of heartache that we all feel at such a tragic loss.”

The school also canceled formal recruitment for sororities in the wake of the student’s death.
