This Weekend: Picks for Families

There are some great choices in the area this weekend: from Jazz, to Dr. Seuss, Maple Sugaring and Swapping, there’s something for everyone!

    Jazz on Friday

If you haven’t been able to visit Woodmere Art Museum in awhile, this is the last weekend of the True Nature & Possibilities, an exhibition of work by eighth grade Waldorf students on display now through February 26. Woodmere’s Friday night family programming runs from 6-7 p.m., with this week’s focus on “Found Object Creations.” Families can check out Dina Wind’s found object sculptures and create their own artworks. Once 7pm hits, stay and enjoy Friday NIght Jazz (6-8 p.m.) where adults and kids alike enjoy concert performances celebrating iconic jazz musicians. This Friday’s tribute is to the wonderful Nina Simone! Tip: kids are free, but adults need tickets for Friday Night Jazz, so get the Jazz tickets online or when you arrive for the family programming.

Tap into Maples or Read Across America on Saturday

Join the Friends of the Wissahickon on Forbidden Drive (near Northwestern Avenue) for the annual Maple Sugar Day.  Throughout Saturday, you’ll find ongoing maple sugaring demonstrations, pancakes served with real maple syrup, a taste test of many different pancake toppings, as well as freshly made maple candy to taste. Pennsylvania maple syrup products will be available for purchase. This event is FREE for all ages, 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Target stores will tickle the Truffula Trees with a live reading of The Lorax. Celebrate Dr. Seuss’s upcoming birthday with free goody bags, fun activities and more! You can also visit the web page to discover which Dr. Seuss character you are, download a reader’s guide and print our other Seuss activities. From 9-11 a.m. at ALL Target Stores.

    Swap on Sunday

Trade out your wardrobe when the Torchlight Initiative hosts the (mostly) Women’s Swap Shop! What’s the Swap Shop? A one day pop-up shop for trading clothes and goods. Bring a bag of your fashionable hand-me-downs, and think fashion rejuvenation in a creative economy!

There’s a $5 entry fee, plus participants should bring at least one bag’s worth of women’s accessories and goods. The Swap will be held Sunday, February 26, 2012 from 1-4 p.m. at the Torchlight Arts and Culture Center, 42 E. Church Lane. Light refreshments and music will be provided.
