The country continues to try to clean up and humanize the barbaric death penalty. Incompetence prevails as experimentation with various drugs proceeds.
What will it take for us, in the words of retired Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun, to stop tinkering with the machinery of death? The main reason we should has nothing to do with untrained prison employees, but with the fact, proven by the Innocence Project and others, that we have convicted many innocent people. Doubtless we have executed many others. We have a botched criminal justice system.
