‘Tis the season for outdoor seating — except in these dog days of summer, when no one wants to be outside.

When the sun is mild and the breeze is high, one saving grace of summer in the city is al fresco dining with a friend, no matter how filthy the sidewalk or how faded the umbrella — or how many legs your friend may have.

Recently, when WHYY news director Eugene Sonn was riding by a coffee shop in his town the other day, he noticed that three out of four outdoor tables were occupied by people dining with their dogs.
