No decision yet on SEPTA’s smart card fare contract

SEPTA has not yet awarded a contract for its smart card fare system, and three companies await word on their bids.

Now 18 months behind scheduled on the contract, SEPTA says it might wait a month on the decision. The Inquirer reports a SEPTA board committee was set to review the bids yesterday and make a recommendation. SEPTA could award the contract next week, or wait until its Nov. 10 board meeting.

SEPTA cites worries about backlash from losing bidders as a reason for the delay. Even when the contract is awarded, the new fare system will take a few years to implement.
