N.J. teen killed: Sticks head out of bus emergency hatch, hits overpass

A tragic accident has left a New Jersey teen dead.

There were about 65 kids aboard a double-decker bus bound for a Sweet 16 party. One of the kids, 16-year-old Daniel Fernandez, from Sayreville, N.J. was killed when he stuck his head out of the emergency hatch, striking the underside of a highway overpass.

According to ABC6, a security guard on the bus reported that he had warned the kids to avoid the emergency hatch.

The guard went down to tell the driver that it was getting hot on the second floor of the bus, and that’s when he heard the screaming.

Fernandez was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Designer Transportation, which operated the bus, expressed its “deepest heartfelt sympathy” for the boy’s family and plans to conduct an internal investigation.
