New Jersey laws on tap for a much-needed upgrade
Two New Jersey senators are hoping to make some changes to the state law that will create equal rights for women — in language, anyway.
State Sens. Loretta Weinberg and jennifer Beck, a Democrat and Republic, want to change the wording of some very outdated state laws, the Associated Press reports.
Among them is a law that says a woman and man must wait 72 hours before getting married unless the man was arrested for “bastardy, rape, fornication or of having had carnal knowledge of an unmarried female.” Then they can get married whenever they like.
Another says a woman forfeits her property to her husband if she’s been “ravished,” unless the kindhearted fellow forgives her and allows her to continue living in the house. How sweet.
Feed the Feed: Is changing the wording of outdated laws important for preserving civil rights, or is it just a waste of legislators’ time?
