National Republican group backs O’Donnell

The leader of the National Republican Senatorial Campaign shows support for U.S. Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell with big donation.

The Delaware Republican Party leadership may have spent the last two weeks running ads critical of Christine O’Donnell’s personal finances and other issues, but now the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) is coming to O’Donnel’s side.

NRSC Chairman Senator John Cornyn (R- TX) issued a statement of support for the Delaware Republican nominee earlier today.  “Let there be no mistake: The National Republican Senatorial Committee – and I personally as the committee’s chairman – strongly stand by all of our Republican nominees, including Christine O’Donnell in Delaware.”

To back up the statement of support, Cornyn says the NRSC will send O’Donnell’s campaign a check for the maximum donation allowed, $42,000.  Cornyn wouldn’t commit to spending more money on ads for O’Donnell, saying that it’s “not in Republicans’ interest to advertise our spending strategy to our opponents.”  He says the NRSC remains “committed to holding Democrat nominee New Castle County Executive Chris Coons accountable this November.”

O’Donnell used numerous appearances on national broadcast and cable news programs this morning to encourage supporters around the country to donate to her campaign, and it’s apparently paying off.  O’Donnell’s official Twitter page is touting that O’Donnell has raised more than $200,000 in less than half a day following last night’s upset win.  Just a week and a half ago, O’Donnell’s campaign was celebrating the arrival of the Tea Party Express and their plans to spend $250,000 on advertising in the final days of the primary campaign.
