Mt. Airy to be featured in the New York Times Travel section

The New York Times will feature profile of Mt. Airy in tomorrow’s a future edition. Earlier this month Germantown made the NYT’s Frugal Traveler blog.

NewsWorks has learned that some of the businesses that were interviewed for the article include: Mt. Airy Arts Garage project, The Wine Thief bistro, and Mainly Shoes and More.

The Mt. Airy Arts Garage when completed will be a home to multiple artists at 9-11 W. Mt. Airy Ave. The idea is similar to what Baltimore did with The Torpedo Factory.

The Wine Thief restaurant is fairly new. It opened last summer at 7152 Germantown Ave. with the help of a $46,000 city grant as part of Philadelphia’s own version of the stimulus program. The restaurant is somewhat unique in that it doesn’t just throw out old food but instead turns 90% of it into compost.

Mainly Shoes & More opened in January at 7167 Germantown Ave. This is just one of the businesses entrepreneur Skip Tyree has planned for Mt. Airy. He’s currently renovating the old New York Chicken and Seafood spot for his new restaurant Avenue Bistro. Tyree is also thinking about opening a pizza restaurant but hasn’t found a location yet.

There are many other businesses that are likely to be mentioned in the NYT’s piece. So, can’t wait to see how it turns out.
