Mt. Airy resident first to spot fire at National Constitution Center

A fire broke out at the National Constitution Center on Independence Mall about 9:20 p.m. Wednesday.

Flames were visible in the building’s second story as firefighters broke through the doors to reach the roof. The fire appears to have started in an area above the center’s cafeteria.

James Tucker, a Mt. Airy resident who is the security supervisor at WHYY, saw the smoke and alerted the center’s security.

Moments later, sirens sounded and fire engines clogged the street in front of the building. The smell of smoke was thick in the light drizzle.
