Motorcyclist killed in East Falls crash identified as Phila U. student Matthew Glass [Updated]

10/23, 9 a.m. update: The man involved in yesterday’s fatal motorcycle accident in East Falls has been identified as Matthew Glass, a second year student at Philadelphia University in the School of Business Administration. Philadelphia Police say Glass, 19, was from Earleville, Md.

President Stephen Spinelli issued a notification to the school community on his blog late Monday afternoon.

“Today, we mourn the loss of a member of the Philadelphia University community,” Spinelli said in the post. “This is a sad day and will be a challenging time for Matthew’s family and friends, and for the Philadelphia University community. As soon as we have information about any services, we will notify you.”

Philadelphia Police say Glass was heading eastbound on the 3100 block of West School House Lane just after 9 a.m. Monday when a 2010 Lexus came out of a private driveway and struck his motorcycle. A police spokeswoman said Glass was thrown 30 feet from his bike.

He was pronounced dead at Temple University Hospital shortly after the crash. Police say the driver of the Lexus did not sustain any major injuries.

The accident is still under investigation.

“I encourage you to support one another during this time and avail yourself of the resources on campus in dealing with Matthew’s death,” Spinelli said. “Our deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of Matthew Glass.”
