Mixed-use development occupy former Phoenixville steel mill site

Phoenixville Borough Council has given conditional-use approval to a mixed-used development on the site of an old steel mill near French Creek.

If the proposal passes full council this full, work could begin as early as late 2011.

Plans from O Creek Associates call for 80,000 square feet of retail, 275 apartments and 30,000 square feet of office space complete with a five-level parking garage, as the West Chester Daily Local reports.

The site would blend in with the streetscape on the 100-block of Bridge Street, despite some residents’ wish to see the property preserved as open space. Borough Manager Jean Krack says that’s an unlikely result for the former steel mill site, and is supportive of the development proposal and accompanying plan to move that section of the Schuylkill River Trail closer to French Creek.
