Mental illness and stigma

    With Eagles football player Shawn Andrews talking openly about depression, there has also been renewed attention to the stigma attached to mental illness. Fans have called Andrews “weak” and “lazy” – comments the player admits have been hurtful. One local family knows all about the stigma of depression. After keeping a painful family secret for years, they have finally decided to tell their story and to write a book about it. They spoke with WHYY’s Maiken Scott.
