Mendte: Philly should market history and Rocky
Philadelphia is not hip. So says Philly mag contributor Larry Mendte, who has a different idea for the city about attracting tourists.
The arts, food and nightlife scenes we have are a dime a dozen, he says, so why not play up things other cities don’t have: history and Rocky.
As embarrassing as it might seem to rely on an old bell and a statue from a movie as the biggest things we have going for us, Mendte says those corner the markets Philadelphia needs to reach: Tea Partiers looking to connect with the founding fathers, parents whose kids need a history lesson and people who only associate this city with Rocky. His argument? Get them there, then wow ’em with everything else.
Feed the Feed: Is there potential here? Should cities market what they have and use everything else as icing on the cake?
