Ligambie and others due in court for bail hearing

Update: Ligambi will be held without bail, the Associated Press reports. U.S. District Court Judge Timothy Rice called Ligambi a danger to the community. We’ll have the full story later.

Original report: “Uncle Joe” Ligambi is due in court this afternoon with two of his associates for a bail hearing stemming from conspiracy and extortion charges. They’re among the 10 arrested Monday and the overall 13 who face charges.

Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer told WHYY’s Susan Phillips Ligambi and his organization used threats of violence to collect on loans with interest of up to 152 percent.

We’ll have more information after the 1:30 hearing, and Susan will tell us later about the state of Philadelphia’s mobster culture.
