Less Marcellus Shale gas, Get Healthy Philly’s impact, development rumble in Point Breeze, refreshing Roxborough’s library

In last night’s State of the Union address, President Obama touted his administration’s support for “all out all of the above” domestic energy strategy – specifically calling out shale gas. (And offshore drilling? Have we learned nothing?) Meanwhile NewsWorks/State Impact-PA reports that the U.S. Department of Energy now says there’s a lot less recoverable gas in the Marcellus Shale region than was previously thought.

Get Healthy Philly put $24 million of federal stimulus money to work in Philly. The deadline to spend the funds is March 13, and NewsWorks looks back on the lasting impact of that funding, including bike lanes, directional signage for cyclists, and an educational campaign about the rules of sharing the road.

OCF Realty continues its struggle to open a coffee shop at 20th and Federal streets, and Naked Philly (part of the OCF family) continues to document the saga. The regularly scheduled South Philadelphia H.O.M.E.S community zoning meeting was postponed until next Monday after protesters and cops graced Monday night’s meeting. Stay tuned.

The sign for Roxborough’s Free Library is busted, but the library and its friends group are raising money to replace it, reports Roxborough Review. So far they have $9,000 in hand but need about $15,000 more. Branch manager Bruce Siebers told the Roxborough Review that the public will get to choose their favorite sign design option. A power wash and paint touch ups are also planned to freshen up the branch.
