Lawyers for two ex-Christie aides call for immunity
Lawyers for two former underlings of Republican New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie say lawmakers should be able to offer their clients immunity from prosecution in exchange for providing information for their investigation of possible political payback.
The lawyers made their cases in court filings Friday on behalf of former aide Bridget Kelly and ex-campaign manager Bill Stepien. The briefs are the latest court papers in a dispute over whether the legislative committee can force the two to provide documents and testify.
Christie fired Kelly and cut ties with Stepien in January after revelations they were involved in closures of traffic lanes near the George Washington Bridge possibly as retribution against a Democratic mayor who didn’t endorse Christie.
Christie has said he knew nothing of the planning or execution of the traffic-blocking plot.
Federal prosecutors also are investigating.
