Lawmakers withdraw Paterno’s name for Medal of Freedom

In more aftermath of the Penn State sex abuse scandal, ex-football coach Joe Paterno is being stripped of another honor.

Nominated in September for a Presidential Medal of Freedom, Paterno has lost the support of Sens. Pat Toomey and Bob Casey. The pair joined U.S. Rep. Glenn Thompson in writing a letter celebrating Paterno’s “substantial contributions to collegiate athletics, higher education and American society.”

But Paterno has since been fired from his position after it was revealed he failed to report to authorities the allegations of child sexual abuse by former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.

The Associated Press reports Thompson hasn’t said whether he’ll withdraw his petition for Paterno.
