Kane seeks $12M boost for AG’s office

Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane is getting a warm reception from the state Senate Appropriations Committee even though her agency wants more money.

The Democrat asked the panel Tuesday to approve a 14 percent spending boost to cover negotiated salaries and benefits for more than 700 staffers and to hire 16 additional drug agents.

Republican Gov. Tom Corbett proposes flat-funding the office at $87 million, but Kane says that wouldn’t keep up with costs and her aides said it would eliminate 108 positions.

Committee members quizzed Kane about topics that included her opposition to legalization of marijuana to the success of an ongoing crackdown in Hazleton by her office’s mobile crimes unit.

Appropriations Chairman Jake Corman tells Kane his committee will do whatever it can to support her request.
