Injured Delaware County wrestler in Youth Services custody pending parents’ decision on surgery

The injured high school wrestler whose parents are fighting doctors’ recommendations for surgery will remain in the custody of Delaware County Youth Services until at least Thursday. His parents support herbal treatments over surgery.

Upper Chichester’s Mazzerati Mitchell, 16, suffered a back injury during a wrestling match that left him unable to feel or move his body. Doctors at Jefferson want to operate on the teenager, but his parents have declined.

After a hearing today, a judge ordered Mitchell remain in CYS custody until Thursday, when his parents have been given a deadline to change their minds about treatment, as the Delaware County Times reports.

If necessary, doctors and CYS are able to override the parents’ decision.
