NewsWorks turned one and all Abdel-Hadi Davis got was an awesome new iPad

Abdel-Hadi Davis had some time to burn between doctor’s appointments on Nov. 15, so he decided to stop in West Oak Lane’s Green Soul restaurant for a bite to eat.

Recalling a seemingly innocuous life moment a month later, he ordered the Cajun Salmon BLT and a Green Smoothie – both delicious – but was a tad disappointed they were out of the sweet potato pie. As he waited for lunch, Davis filled out an entry form to win a iPad at a NewsWorks first-birthday event table set up at Green Soul during that same lunch hour. He would soon come to learn that, out of the more than 700 entries, his would win the grand prize.

“I couldn’t believe it. When they called, I said it must be a joke. What’s the catch?” Davis said last week when he came to WHYY’s offices to meet President and CEO Bill Marrazzo and collect his prize.

Davis said he’s the only member of his family not swept up in smart phones, video game or tablets. Make that was the only member.
