The city of Philadelphia will soon have a new chief cultural officer.

Helen Haynes, who is currently director of cultural affairs at Montgomery County College, will take over the reins as Philadelphia’s Chief Cultural Officer beginning June 7.  She says it’s exciting to work in this sector here.  “We’re fighting the trend nationally because engagement and attendance is up in Philadelphia,” Haynes said.  “More families and children are participating in the arts and communities of color are leading the way in that.”Mayor Michael Nutter named Haynes to the post. He said he hopes she connects with all aspects of Philadelphia government.”I think that virtually every department and agency in the government can benefit arts and culture and creativity that goes on in this city,” he said.As for requests from arts groups for more funding, Nutter is making no promises.
