Gubernatorial candidate Williams raising funds from school choice supporters

The Campaign finance reports are in for the candidates in the Pennsylvania governor’s race. One fact stands out from the numbers: Much of the money raised by state Sen. Anthony Hardy Williams comes from proponents of school choice.

State Sen. Anthony Hardy Williams is a Democrat, and the only African American vying to be Governor.

Franklin and Marshall College political science professor Terry Madonna says many Democratic candidates are opposed to vouchers and other forms of alternative education.

“Most African-American political leaders do not favor it and he is one of the rare exceptions,” Madonna said. “This is a position unlike the rest of the three Democatic candidates. He’s taken this position alone, school choice does have its supporters in many places of the state. I do think that is one issue he will draw some support from…”

A new poll shows the Democratic candidates for governor have been virtually invisible to the voters and many said they don’t know enough about Williams to have an opinion.

He’s started running campaign ads designed to change that.
