Escaped Cumberland County prisoner caught 40 years later in Portugal

The FBI Monday arrested a man who escaped from Cumberland County, N.J.’s Bayside State Prison 40 years ago. George Wright, convicted in a 1962 Monmouth County murder, was found in Portugal.

Wright’s been busy since he escaped in 1970, working in Algeria, Paris and elsewhere before landing in Portugal. His case became a top priority when the New York-New Jersey Fugitive Task Force was formed in 2002, the Press of Atlantic City reports.

The FBI began closing in on Wright last week after staring the case fresh as part of the task force. Portuguese police assisted with the capture.
