Dragon Boat merit badge for Boy Scouts?

Philadelphia scouts are getting ten-person boats from China. They will learn to row the vessels in Manayunk

Boy Scouts in Philadelphia will get a new way to exercise and open some new horizons. A delegation from China will travel to the city to make their presentation this week.

The gift from China is six dragon boats which will be given to the Boy Scouts this week. Mike Blundetto is Dragon Boat USA’s Coaching and Training Chairman. He says the donation opens some new horizons for the scouts.

“These particular boats that we had donated are ten-person boats, they are a little easier to maneuver to get around on trailers or things of that nature to get from one point to the next. And the scouts will be able to use these to offer Dragon Boat regatta’s either amongst themselves or with the dragon Boat communities.”

Blundetto says the scouts are even considering the creation of a dragon boat merit badge for those who complete training on the new acquisitions. The boats are complete with the drums to call the rowing cadence and authentic carved heads and tails. The boats are currently in Manayunk, where there’s a new spot to access the Schuylkill river.
