Delco school closures come as surprise for teachers, parents

Parishioners of two Delaware County parochial schools gave the Archdiocese of Philadelphia an earful last night when they were told at special meetings the schools will close at the end of this year. There are just two weeks left for students at St. Philomena in Lansdowne and Our Lady of Charity in Brookhaven, and it’ll be the last time they’re there.

Both schools had fewer than 100 students enrolled for the 2011-2012 school year, as the Delaware County Times reports, and each had at least one grade that would only have had five students. Our Lady of Charity parents were especially angered by the news, since they were told in November the school would close, and then told weeks later the school would stay open.

An emergency meeting is also set for St. Kevin School in Springfield Thursday night to discuss that school’s future.
