Delaware boy shot in head out of surgery

The 2-year-old boy remains in critical condition at A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children following surgery, police said.

According to New Castle County police, detectives learned the toddler accessed the loaded gun from an unknown location inside his Claymont home where he shot himself in the head, presumably by accident. Specific details about the little boy’s injury have not been disclosed.

The shooting investigation remains underway as the Delaware Attorney General’s Office reviews the case to determine if criminal charges will be filed.

On Tuesday morning,  officers responded to the unit block of Cliffside Court for the report of a 2-year-old who was shot. Officers attempted to resuscitate the child, who was airlifted to the Wilmington children’s hospital.
