Crosswalks planned to boost pedestrian safety on Route 1 in Delaware

Delaware transportation officials say a major boost in the number of crosswalks along U.S. Route 1 in Sussex County is part of a plan to improve pedestrian safety.

WXDE-FM reports that the plan includes adding 12 crosswalks to two existing crosswalks and adding sidewalks along stretches of Route 1 where they don’t already exist.

The Route 1 Safety Task Force, which is tasked with making safety recommendations for the major artery between Dewey Beach and Lewes, met Wednesday.

Safety Programs Manager Adam Weiser says extra crosswalks will add to traffic congestion along an already crowded Route 1, but pedestrians have to get across the road safely.

State Police say they’re stretched thin and don’t have any spots to set up safety and speed enforcement along Route 1.
