Councilman wants review of construction goals in Philadelphia

Listen

Diversifying Philadelphia’s construction workforce is a goal for a Philadelphia City councilman.

Wilson Goode wants a close review of the aspirational goals for minority hiring for Philadelphia construction projects.”The current goals grew out of the mayor’s commission on construction industry diversity and they are set at 32 percent minority male 7 percent female and 2 percent disabled in terms of workforce hours and two percent disabled in terms of workforce hours,” Goode said. “We believe that was based upon a one-time study and that study was supposed to be updated on an annual basis.”Goode says new data should drive a change in those goals.”We expect that number may change based on performance on contracts and based on the availability of disadvantaged workers,” he said.City council legally can’t set hard goals, but diversity is discussed when big construction projects seek zoning variances or city financing.
