Corbett says new security SUVs not his doing

Just when you though N.J. Gov. Chris Christie would be making headlines forever for his use of a state helicopter to attend his son’s baseball game, Pa. Gov. Tom Corbett is defending his own use of state transportation.

Corbett says it wasn’t his decision for the state police to buy four new sport utility vehicles for the executive security team. He’ll ride in them, though.

The Associated Press reports the SUVS are used to transport the guv, lieutenant governor and their wives. Corbett said today the purchase was a security issue, and noted that his former car was approaching 170,000 miles.

The purchase included two 2011 Chevy Suburbans at $53,000 each and two 2011 Chevy Traverses at about $40,000 each. A state spokesman told the AP State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan OK’d the purchase.
