Corbett readies school-voucher plan

Gov. Tom Corbett is expected to announce plans Tuesday for school vouchers and other education-related legislation in Pennsylvania this fall.

More than a year ago, Corbett visited a York charter school to stump for a new way of judging teachers–based on tailor-made evaluations and student performance. He is expected to return to York to roll out the rest of his education package.

It won’t just include school-choice measures, meant to give students in failing schools the means to get out, the governor said.

“I use school reform, OK, because I think it is school reform. School reform was out there in the last session,” he said. “I think there has to be some timeliness to it, because it’s part of a planning process for the following school year.”

In August, Education Secretary Ron Tomalis told state House lawmakers the governor would support phasing in taxpayer-funded vouchers for students in failing schools.

More recently, he said Corbett would sign a bill revamping the administration of charter schools.
