Constitution Center hosts career expo for vets

Area veterans gathered with employers Friday for the “Be A Hero — Hire A Hero” career expo at the National Constitution Center.

After leaving the military, Dayron Alvarez of New Jersey got a degree in finance and started looking for a job in May.

The Navy veteran says it’s been frustrating so far.

“You know, we’re already in December and I still don’t have a job,” he said. “Just a foot in a door, one chance. One chance that I’m going to get, I’m going to take it and run with it.”

Glenn Kildare, who is about to end 20 years of service with the Navy, was attending his first career workshop Friday.

“Do I think I’ll be prepared? Yes, because that’s the way I’m trained to be. Am I nervous? Absolutely,” he said. “I have a beautiful wife and my two daughters who are looking for daddy to be that guy.”

Event organizers say they hope to host regular career expos for veterans in the Philadelphia area.

They’re also planning to expand the program to more cities next year.
