Chickens strewn across Delaware highway [photos]

A truck carrying live chickens crashed with another truck on Delaware Rt. 1 near Smyrna early Wednesday morning, causing massive backups that lasted into the morning rush hour.

The crash caused the chicken cages to spill out of the truck and break open, sending chickens across the highway and killing most of the birds.

Delaware State Police say the incident happened around 3:45 Wednesday morning on the southbound side of Rt. 1 near Smyrna. No one was injured in the crash. Police are still investigating what caused the trucks to crash into each other.

The highway was closed for hours as crews worked to remove the trucks from the highway and collect hundreds of dead chickens.
