The northern shore region is experiencing “the most critical shortage” of Type O-negative blood “in a very long time,” the Central Jersey Blood Center announced today on its Facebook page.

The center cites the recent winter storm, several trauma cases at local hospitals, and other states unable to ship blood due to shortages of their own as reasons for the region’s shortage.

Those with Type O-negative blood are considered universal donors.

Anyone interested in helping is asked to schedule a 30 minute blood donation appointment at one of the centers in Shrewsbury, Howell, or Toms River. Schedule online or dial (888) 71-BLOOD.
