Former Philadelphia police inspector seeks probation for extortion

Carlo “Danny” Castro will ask a federal judge to keep him out of prison today.

The 48-year-old Castro faces about a three-year guideline sentenced in an extortion case. His extortion plea came after a jury deadlocked on eight of 10 counts at trial.

Three jurors are among those asking the judge for leniency. They call Castro a good man who succumbed to outside pressure.

Castro’s crime involves his effort to get back $90,000 he invested in a soured real-estate deal. He agreed to an offer to use force to collect the debt. But the offer came from an FBI informant.

Castro is expected to keep his $4,800-a-month police pension because the extortion was not work-related.
