Body on Ocean City beach identified as missing boat captain

State police say a body found on a southern New Jersey beach has been identified as a boat captain who went missing late last month.

David McAuliffe’s body was found around 6 a.m. Wednesday by Ocean City municipal workers who were doing cleanup work on the beach. An autopsy determined he died of accidental drowning.

McAuliffe’s disappeared when his Sea Tow boat, the Cape Hatteras, sank off the Great Egg Harbor Inlet on April 23. The Coast Guard suspended its search for the 34-year-old two days later.

The 49-foot-long boat was raised Sunday after it was found upside down and partially buried in sand on Thursday night.
