Authorities say a body found in waters off the Jersey Shore has been identified as that of a man went missing while trying to swim in the Atlantic Ocean for the first time.

Nicolas Guilhot of France was swimming with friends late Friday morning when he began to struggle and disappeared in waters off Island Beach State Park.

On Saturday morning, a fisherman found a body not far from where the 25-year-old Guilhot was last seen. That came several hours after the Coast Guard had suspended its extensive search for Guilhot.

Larry Ragonese, a spokesman for the state’s Environmental Protection Department, told the Asbury Park Press on Sunday that the authorities had confirmed that the body was Guilhot. But a cause of death has not been disclosed.
