Berks County Commissioner to fill shoes of longest-serving Pennsylvania legislator

Judy Schwank is now the senator for Pennsylvania’s 11th District, after defeating Larry Medaglia in yesterday’s special election. The Democratic victor proposed more protections for farms and lower property taxes.

By 10 p.m. yesterday, Schwank had 19,438 of the votes to Medaglia’s 14,236, the Morning Call reports. Only two of the district’s 128 precincts hadn’t filed results by then.

Schwank, a former Berks County Commissioner, takes over for Sen. Michael O’Pake, who died in December. He was the longest-serving Pennsylvania legislator.
