Police investigating window-breaking confrontation at G’Town Sports

Is a $65 pair of Puma sneakers worth smashing the window of G’Town Sports? Last Friday afternoon, an incident involving an angry customer led to just that.

According to someone in the store at the time – but who didn’t want to be publicly identified because of safety concerns – a customer complained about a defective pair of sneakers.

When the store refused to refund or exchange the purchase because of no obvious problems other than looking worn, an argument ensued. The regular customer left.

About two hours later, though, someone threw a rock through the store’s front window. The running theory is that it’s a friend of the customer, who always pays in cash, which means there’s no credit card transaction by which he could be identified.

Although there were many witnesses — the store is located near the busy intersection of Germantown and Chelten avenues — only one person got involved. They got word to an employee (by passing a note, no less) that the rock thrower was still in the area, watching as police arrived at lunchtime.

By the time word made it to the authorities, the angry customer and rock tosser had already fled, witnesses said.

The suspect is described as a 5-foot-9 male with a slender build wearing a burgundy hoodie.

Any information regarding the incident is asked to call the Philadelphia Police’s anonymous tip line at 215-686-TIPS.
