Alleged mob boss arrested, 13 indicted

Update: WHYY’s Susan Phillips reports from the press conference: 13 mobsters have been indicted on various conspiracy, extortion and gambling charges. No murder charges this time around. Susan will have the full report later.

Original report: Joseph “Uncle Joe” Ligambi has been an alleged mob boss since 2001 when “Skinny Joey” Merlino went to jail. But Ligambi was arrested this morning after a five-year investigation.

The Inquirer reports the charges focus on gambling and a loan shark operation, but the full details will be announced at a news conference later this morning held by the Department of Justice, the FBI and Pennsylvania and New Jersey law enforcement officials.

Ligambi served 10 years for murder before having the conviction overturned in 1997.
