Actor, South Philly native Sherman Hemsley dies

    We watched Sherman Hemsley move on up in the ’70s. Today, the South Philadelphia native is being mourned.

    Hemsley, 74, died Tuesday of natural causes in his Texas home, according to the Inquirer.

    He played businessman George Jefferson for 10 years on the popular sitcom, “The Jeffersons,” after his character was first introduced on “All in the Family.”

    Hemsley grew up around 22nd and Christian streets, and attended Bok Technical High School before leaving for the Air Force. His work brought him back to Philadelphia when he played a city deacon in the sitcom “Amen.”
