$6.7 million expansion for Bala Cynwyd Library

The second in a $24 million renovation project for Lower Merion’s six libraries, an expansion has been approved for Bala Cynwyd Library, despite conversations about scaling back the project or scrapping it altogether.

Approved 7-4 by township commissioners Thursday, work could begin later this year as the Ludington Library project in Bryn Mawr wraps up.

Designs by Vitetta Architects include a 6,000-sq.ft. expansion, teen and children areas and handicap accessibility. Repairs will be made to the roof and HVAC system, reports the Main Line Times, and the building will use a geothermal energy system.

Without the expansion, the architect say, the library would actually lose space to accommodate the accessibility guidelines included an upgrade-only alternative project plan. The more expensive expansion will create more space.
