22-year-old man killed in Monday evening crash in Toms River

    A 22-year-old Toms River man died as a result of injuries sustained in a single-vehicle crash in Toms River Monday evening.

    Richard C. Bitterle III of Larch Drive was traveling northbound on Route 9 in a 2013 Kia at 10:48 p.m. when he crossed over the center yellow lines for an undetermined reason, the Toms River Police Department said in a release.

    Bitterle then left the roadway and struck a tree just north of Sunset Avenue, police said.

    The Pleasant Plains and Silverton fire companies responded and extricated Bitterle, who was transported to Community Medical Center in Toms River and later succumbed to his injuries, according to police.

    The investigation is led by Toms River Police Traffic Officers Mark Nater and David Bartoshek. Investigator Matthew Scutti of the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department provided additional investigative assistance.
