Philadelphia Challenge Cup tries to attract bigger crowds

The top rowers in the country will once again come together for the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia.

Rowing’s Gold Cup dates back to 1920 when Philadelphian John B Kelly won the award as the best single rower in the world. The race for the cup ended in the 60’s and the actual cup disappeared. Businessman Herb Lotman bought the trophy when it turned up in the 90’s in an antique shop and announced the return of the race.

“The premiere global event will make Philadelphia a must city for rowers from around the world and the destination city for rowing fans from around the world,” said Lotman.

The cup challenge will return as part of May’s Dad Vail Regatta says organizer William McNabb.  “The whole idea is to get the four best single scullers in the world and the addition is to get the four best female scullers here one day to race,” McNabb said.

The event with a $35,000 purse will be held on the river May 14th.
