2011 Child Abuse Report: 1 in 1,000 Pa. children was abuse victim last year

    Pennsylvania’s Department of Public Welfare has released its annual Child Abuse Report, which found about 1 in 1,000 children in the state was a victim of child abuse in 2011.

    The report tracks child abuse case data collected every year.

    Some of the findings highlighted in the 153-page 2011 report:

    34 child fatalities occurred in 2011, one more than in 2010
    24,378 reports of suspected child abuse were received, a decline of 237 reports from 2010
    3,408 substantiated reports came in,  a decrease of 248 from 2010
    31 of 67 counties received more reports in 2011 compared to 2010

    The report also includes information from the Pennsylvania Citizen Review Panels, regionalized groups around the state that work with the DPW to improve child abuse reporting and prevention tactics.
