“How Music Got Free”

Listen 00:48:43

Guest: Stephen Witt

When was the last time you bought a CD? If you’re like most music consumers, the days of paying for a physical copy of music are long over. And it makes sense – CDs and records take up space, and listeners are often paying for an album’s worth of songs when they only intend to listen to one, or maybe two tracks. With the invention of the internet, some missteps by the music industry, and an industrious group of illegal music distributors, hearing your favorite song at this point is essentially free of cost. We’ll discuss the history of digital music piracy when Marty is joined by STEPHEN WITT, author of How Music Got Free: The End of an Industry, the Turn of the Century, and the Patient Zero of Piracy.
